Key Points:

The mind is the watchman of the soul, commanded to judge and determine whether something is good and pleasing to God, so the affections can long for it and the will can choose it.

The mind is the "first line of defense"—it is never to forget the polluting, corrupting, defiling power of sin and how much God loathes it.

Sin attempts to deceive the mind (temptation)—it falsely presents things to the mind in such a way that their true nature, causes, and effects remain hidden. By only presenting the desirable aspects of temptation, it deceives the mind into making a false judgment.

The mind"s first duty is to know and hold on to the evil of sin and the love of God.

The flesh works to make you forget the design of grace (that you are saved to be holy) and think only of the remedy of grace (if you sin you"ll be forgiven). It says: "Go ahead and indulge—it's already paid for." This is half a gospel (a twisted gospel).

If the mind does not do its job, we have opened our life up to the deeper deceit of the flesh.
