Key Points:
Indwelling sin forces itself upon us with promises and threats (it promises
pleasure and/or it threatens with various forms of punishment, i.e.
mistreatment, disgrace, exclusion, etc.).
Indwelling sin is inbred—working, compelling, and urging us from the
shadows of our hearts—it is a permanent houseguest who is always poking
its nose in, looking over our shoulder, and whispering in our ear . . .
There is no duty we perform for God that sin does not oppose—and the
more spirituality or holiness there in what we do, the greater is it hatred and
opposition; for indwelling sin loathes God.
Because of the opposition of sin to the general purpose of the soul, no one
walks in perfect harmony to God's will in all things.
The more you discover the power of indwelling sin, the less you will suffer
its effects.
The person who understands the evil in his own heart is the only person who
is useful, fruitful, and solid in his beliefs and obedience. Others only delude
themselves and thus upset families, churches, and all other relationships. In
their self-pride and judgment of others, they are showing great
inconsistency.
